There are no winking insider references or dripping sentimentality. It doesn't matter if you love Star Wars or hate it or have never seen it.
Though thankfully it never gets mean-spirited, Spaceballs' complete irreverence toward its main source material is one of its biggest strengths: can you imagine a diehard devoted geek ever coming up with that running merchandising gag?
Somewhat related to this is the cast was chosen due to their comic value rather than how well they fit their archetypes. Likewise, Rick Moranis and John Candy are obviously nothing like Darth Vader and Chewbacca and the movie is all the more hilarious for it.
And somewhat related to both of the prior bits is that Spaceballs actually works as a extremely silly stand-alone sci-fi adventure. It tells a coherent story and there's genuine character development, to boot.
It even features halfway decent special effects for the time! If you can read this you don't need glasses. This movie is very meh.
Well, a comedy should make you laugh and I didn't laugh once I smiled a couple times. I never really felt invested in the story.
The jokes are basically just puns of sorts and references to other movies. I mean, it isn't bad but it just isn't actually funny.
I would say the movie is amusing at best. Characters aren't well developed at all, which would be fine if the movie was funny Overall, if you like puns and slap stick humor with old movie references in nearly every scene I'm not a slap stick comedy lover so take my review with a grain of salt.
To me, 3 stars isn't necessarily worth watching - but at the same time- it isn't a "don't waste your time" sort of movie either.

Throwing tonnes of good and bad jokes at the audience, the viewer is overwhelmed by the sheer madness of the enterprise. I think this has some outrageously memorable lines and performances.
I love Dark Helmet and there are so many funny lines, it is almost impossible to remember them all. My favourite is his explanation to Lone Star in the middle of their fight that 'evil will always triumph, because good is dumb.
It is a brilliant and telling comment on George Lucas, true and cutting deeper than even the best, silliest jokes in this comedy.
Objectively, this is not a very good film. Before going further, for sake of full disclosure I must confess something. Yes, I am totally a Star Wars fanboy, quite a desperate case in fact - and proud of being one too!
That being said, I actually love almost all Star Wars spoofs and parodies well, "Fanboys" I actually liked less without ever having enough of them.
This may be the reason why I always enjoyed watching this film so much. In this film, happening in a galaxy very, very, very, very, very far away, the vicious evil empire based on the planet Spaceball is on the verge of crisis, as its incompetent ruler President Skroob Mel Brooks wasted all its air.
In a desperate attempt to save both his planet and his power the evil President dispatches an enormous spaceship "This ship is too big! If I try to walk to the bridge the film will be over before I arrive!
However, Dark Helmet's old nemesis, space adventurer Lone Star Bill Pullman and his faithful companion Barf a mawg - half man, half dog played by John Candy , accidentally save the Princess and find themselves mercilessly chased by the great Spaceballs starship The humour in this comedy doesn't always fly very high everybody on board of Dark Helmet's spaceship is named Aole, he doesn't strangle his subalterns but shrinks their genitalia, etc.
I am certain you will also love the evil Spaceball salute and the bumper sticker on the rear of Lone Star's Winnebago There are also some pretty good jokes about "Star Trek", "Alien" and "Planet of apes".
The rhytm of the film is fast and none of the scenes are too long, so if there is one which you like less, at least it will be quickly done with.
The degree to which one can enjoy this film is directly proportional to the quantity of "Star Wars" one has in the blood.
Those who never liked "Star Wars" will HATE this film - on another hand I think that all those who liked the original saga Episodes IV to VI at least a little, will really enjoy watching this totally delirious, completely over the top comedy.
Warmly recommended! I missed this when it came out and it's taken me 25 years to catch up. Very funny, broad humour, it had me laughing from when the opening titles rolled.
Lovely performances all round although the breadth of the humour doesn't leave any room for subtlety.
The extras are okay and it does have subtitles. I'd have liked a blooper reel rather than 6 mistakes being pointed out in separate mini scenes.
Mel Brooks commentary struck me as rather sad as he used quite a lot of it to beg Gene Wilder to come back to him. He only really perks up when he himself is on screen.
Its an interesting insight into the mind of Mel Brooks - a genius in many ways. Definitely worth one watch and if you fall for it's charm then one for the "Mr Video" collection.
One person found this helpful. This kind of comedy never gets old! To my shock my husband had never seen this before, I had great memories of watching it as a youngster so purchased so I could share the joy with someone who had never seen it before.
I very much enjoyed seeing it though. If you like parodies then you will like this too. The inhabitants of Planet Spaceball, hatch a devious plan to steal the air from Planet Druidia, by kidnapping the princess after her wedding and holding her for ransom.
The ship sent to kidnap her is commanded by the evil Dark Helmet Rick Moranis. After the princess Daphne Zuniga runs out on her wedding she is confronted by the spaceballs and is saved by Captain Lone-Star Bill Pullman and his half-man, half-dog sidekick Barf.
