I would give this movie stars if I could because it's just so raw and the actors understand the intensity of which this emotion can spiral everything you once knew in a complete degree state of confusion alongside the inner turmoil felt in an identity crisis; it's a coming-of-age through coming-out tale of love that knows no limits and in which only God may judge, a power limited to the ultimate creator and not a privilege belonging to any religion, church clergymen, temple leaders, groups of people,"Elders," nor even Jesus himself, as stated in the new testament.

Possibly one of the most powerful scenes ever filmed is between a mother finding out her son is gay and is absolutely not accepting of this fact.
It's a tough scene to watch as a mother performed brilliantly by Mary Kay place tells her son she cannot accept who he is son played by the doe-eyed Steve Sandvoss in what should have been at the career-defining role.
One of the few movies that actually makes you care about the characters involved. If you're open-minded enough to viewing a gay character led film, you can't do much better than this one.
I was skeptical about the mormon part of this movie. They did get a few things wrong but I really couldnt care less. Ive spent my whole life surrounded by the lds church and this movie stirred something inside me.
I saw myself and so many of my loved ones in the mormon main character. Its a self hatred so ingrained in you that nothing shakes it. Somehow this movie shook me.
It started like just another lustful gay movie. But it turned into so much more. I'm really glad I watched to the end.
I know I will be returning to this one. For the record, let me say first that I am a gay guy. I am also from the rural Midwest, and although I'm not Mormon or from Pocatello Idaho, I know something about growing and being gay in a similar type of environment.
I found the premise that a closeted young gay Mormon missionary would quickly fall for a rather-shallow gay LA party-boy a bit hard to believe. There didn't seem to be much sincere "chemistry" between the two.
Surprisingly, the acting performance that stands out most in the film is that of Mary Kay Place, who plays the mother of the gay Mormon boy.
She strikes the perfect balance between adhering to the rigidity of her religious beliefs, and compassion for her son. Jacqueline Bisset is mostly a walk-on role.
She seems to deliver her lines mechanically. I do have to admit that Steve Sandvoss is nice to look at. He also captures perfectly the gentle naivety of rural Midwestern young men.
One person found this helpful. A modern day Love Story of laughter and pain, of loss and of growth. Finding ones path and realizing that it's not just about the standards society has set forward, its about realizing that love is only about being able to love and being loved back.
Although not clear in the movie, I also hope that it is the realization that a parent must never dissolve themselves of their children, life is short and turns in minute and the loss of a child is both a physical and emotional journey that has no end of its pain or regret.

The actors, all of them, won my heart straight off - especially the two main ones. The theme of a committed believer and an out and out hedonist meeting, locking into, and ultimately healing one another, is a difficult one to tackle - but the success of the director has been phenomenal.
The two boys 'convert' each other in a way: the hedonist sees, is mesmerised by, and in the end acquires the depth he sees in the other boy but so pointedly lacks himself; and the Mormon boy is propelled by love through his fears and then through the imprisoning mean-spiritedness and blindness of his parents' faith, to share in the vitality of his friend's love of life - without at all compromising his own integrity or his awareness of and commitment to the spiritual dimension.
This clearly has been carved straight from the director's own life-experience. The interface between faith and homosexuality has seldom been explored in film, and never, in my experience, as gently, penetratingly and sensitively as in this film.
If you are a believer of any sort, and also homosexual, you have almost certainly felt the isolation and coldness of rejection from both sides.
This film will be God's special blessing to you - as much, I sincerely hope, as it has been, and is for me. I wanted to watch this film again immediately it had finished.
It was funny and sad in equal amounts. I haven't cried watching a film in years but this one had me bawling towards the end. Steve Sandvoss plays the shy yet interested young man very well.
Wes Ramsey too plays the shallow gay man on the scene and puls off the look. Great to see Jacqueline Bisset playing a good role again too.
The film highlights a number of points which is that gay men are often more concerned about looks and that maybe we all do look towards the door for something better to come along.
I recommend this film to everyone - although I guess if you are Mormon you may have to get through some barriers before seeing the merits of the film.
