The lighting is too dark, I had a hard time seeing the night time and underground scenes. A lot of movies and tv shows have been film with dark lighting, which makes it very difficult for those of us with vision problems to see anything.
Unfortunately, reviews for several different releases of the movie are getting mixed together so I can't give separate reviews or star ratings.
The 1-star rating is for the movie, which is unforgivably bad, franchise-killing trash. The following words are for the 2-disc "Extreme Unrated Set".
First, let's talk about the darkness. Yes, many shots in the movie have a severe darkness problem.
It doesn't just look like they were poorly lit. Something looks wrong with the colors and contrast in almost every scene too. It's as if the luminance values were clipped from to which is an option in some MPEG encoders , obliterating detail in both dark and light areas.
But regardless of the cause, if you read the critical reviews from when the movie first came out, this was always just how the movie was. It's not the fault of anyone involved in transferring the movie to home video.
Disc 1 includes not one, but TWO commentary tracks, which include commentaries on the newly restored scenes. The first commentary is by the Strause brothers, who directed, and producer John Davis, who also produced the two previous Predator movies and AvP1.
The second commentary track is by the monster-effects gurus Tom Woodruff Jr. These commentaries mostly deal with the technical side of actually shooting the movie, rather than with their terrible creative decisions, but are nonetheless a huge improvement over the movie's actual dialog, and should be considered the preferred way of watching the movie if for some reason you are ever forced to endure it.
They're also a fun source of trivia. For example, during shooting of the swimming pool scenes, nobody was allowed to actually pour anything into the pool, so when the Predator pours his evidence-destroying blue goo into the swimming pool, that had to be done with CGI.
There's nothing on disc 2 but the "Bonus digital copy" in WMV format. Where are all the making-of featurettes? Oh, they're on disc 1.
And there's less than an hour of them combined. We also get two trailers clocking in at green band and red band.
What the heck? Look, man, when I buy a 2-disc special edition of a movie, I expect the Alien Quadrilogy treatment. I expect there to be so many hours of special features that you can't cram them onto the same disc as the movie itself.
That's the whole reason why there's a second disc. This is just the one-disc release of the movie with a WMV copy tossed in on a second disc to pad the disc count.
What a ripoff! Nonetheless, what little we do get is pretty rewarding, since the featurettes don't suffer the same darkness issues as the movie itself and they let you get a pretty good look at the monsters.
In fact, I'd much rather sit through all 50 minutes of the making-of featurettes again than sit through 50 minutes of the actual movie.
Be on the lookout for that. Bad visuals. Excessive contrast in video; shots of aliens are lacking.
I've been going through the entire Aliens and Predators franchises, watching movie by movie. I'm impressed with how well some of the movies have held up over the years.
However, just got to this one as was really disappointed. It was a marked departure from other rest of the films in many ways.
Rather than too "washed out" there it was too much contrast and it really impacted the viewing experience in a bad way. I thought the Alien Predator beast was very underwhelming.
Not what I was expecting and left me disappointed there too. And the kid getting stabbed through the chest at the end and walking away with a smile?

This is the one for you. Done believe everything you read. Watch and judge for yourself. The whole thing seems styled after the Personally, I think this is a very fun movie.
I mean, "The Blob" had essentially the same elements as this movie: small town, kids doing their thing but getting embroiled in the "monster problem", etc.
It's true it gets a bit dark, which didn't bother me, however I can understand how people might not like that. Otherwise, this is a "monster movie" and definitely holds its own in that vein.
It's no better or worse than the first movie. And even though it's very different it does continue where the first movie left off. In any case, if you want a good Saturday night monsters wreak havoc in a small town movie this is a good choice.
Also, remember, it's Alien vs Predator, not Hamlet though the body count is similar and is essentially good "monster fun".
Other than that, the creature effects were cool and the 'hero' Predator in this film is more reminiscent of the original Arnie Predator.
Also, for some reason this film was saturated with gore. Nothing wrong with gore, but there is a touch-much in this one.
I was obsessed with the first AVP movie. It was original and creative for what you would expect. This one was hardly even entertaining Dont expect to see anything if you are watching it during the day.
What I liked about the Alien vs. Predator film is that it was just that- the aliens fighting the predators. This is basically the two species in some small town just killing people.
