There's something crushingly repetitive about Criminal, primarily because of its contained setting which risks restraining the action to the point it feels claustrophobic.

Edi Gathegi as the gangster involved in all the shenanigans stands out even among the capable leads of John Travolta and Dan Stevens.

There are unexpected outlandish mafia themed narratives, or perhaps slight parody of it, that will deliver chuckle or thrill to audience. However, even with most of the story manage to be entertaining, the movie tends to overreach.

It has plenty of side characters or events that may not be that important yet still get a lot of screen time.

It tries to pull off too many tricks that don't resonate better than its core story. Not to mention the twisting revelation at the end feels rather abrupt and might too far fetch, although it's still decent due to the outlandish nature.

Warning: Spoilers. If John Travolta wasn't in the movie, you'd probably have skipped past this one already. And even then, with each scene that he is in, you spend more time looking at his glued on hair piece than following the movie.

Essentially the plot is 4 guys get mixed up with the mob and incur a large debt. To wipe the debt clean, they're forced to kidnap some guy for the mob boss Travolta.

Whilst I think the twist is convoluted enough to make it not predictable the last 10 minutes of the movie is needed to explain the twist , at the same time it is not all that surprising or satisfying when revealed.

Leaving you with a feeling of MEH at the end. It's been done many times before, with better set-ups and better actors. Nothing special here.

Very average. Just finished the movie, and I was captivated the whole time. I was surprised to see that the entire cast put together a very convincing performance.

The script and plot were also clever, and somewhat original for a change which was refreshing to see. It did seem a little Tarantino-esque with some of the music, dialog, and situation.

But I guess if you're going to model your work after anyone, QT is probably the guy to go with. Overall I enjoyed the movie, and I do recommend checking it out.

It probably is not for everybody but if you are a fan of Guy Ritchie and Quentin Tarantino's work, I imagine you will probably enjoy this too.

Well, imagine an entire film trying to recreate that wittiness without much success and you have Criminal Activities. This isn't a really bad film.

If you don't have anything else to do and you've seen everything else you're not exactly wasting your time on it. But it certainly isn't a good film either.

The big surprise Usual Suspects twist ending is so convoluted that I really didn't understand where the money came from even if it was satisfying to learn that the victim of bullying was really the one in power all along.

This is really one of those just okay movies that won't make any waves when it splashes into the Red Box. Warren tells them about a stock that's about to go up - he has insider trading info - and the agent who has been stockpiling the stock is getting nervous about being caught and needs to dump his shares.

Noah says he can get it. The stock tanks and wipes out the investment. He will wipe the slate clean if they will help him with a problem he's having - kidnap the brother of the man who kidnapped his niece so that he can get her back.

Boy could this have been better. It's a complicated story, and a good one, but the script and direction aren't strong enough to carry it.

It's just not Tarantino. The acting is uneven with some good performances. It's so distracting. This is the first time I write a review on this site so forgive me if it's a bit messy.

What prompted me to write a review is the low score of this movie Criminal Activities had me glued to the screen for the entirety of the film.

Every actor was spot on in their role and there was not a moment where I thought of them as actors. This movie really managed to keep me on my feet because you could never know what was going to happen next.

I'm no genius but I usually figure out the plot. In this case I had it all wrong, this film went a different way than most and didn't follow basic Hollywood formulas.

A bold move but I would argue it paid off in this case. With a bigger budget the film could've had better production and a more complete script.

When they hatch a plan to play the stock market for a sure thing that will make them all millionaires they jump at the chance.

When things go wrong they not only lose their money but they find out that one of them borrowed money from the mob.

Now, left with no other choice they must make a deal in order to survive. I love mob movies and was looking forward to this. This is not the type of mob movie I was hoping for.

The movies is essentially a kidnapping and little by little more truth is uncovered. The movie isn't that bad and does keep you watching but it was a little slow and not really what I was expecting it to be.

The acting is really good, even though it is hard to buy Travolta as a mob boss. This is a decent one time watch movie but nothing all that amazing and nothing I think I would watch again.

Overall, good but nothing to scream about. I give this a B. I watched this because of the John Travolta and Jackie Earle Haley connection as I've enjoyed much of their previous work.

The acting was OK and the story, although not original seemed to start off well and I was looking forward to a romp along the lines of "A Family Business".

Previously law abiding citizens with intelligence enough to hold down white collar jobs, then forced to commit a kidnapping would employ planning involving how to subdue then restrain a target though the use of a taser and heavy duty tie- wraps.

However, they blunder in with rope and high hopes. Then in the aftermath, the four then show their faces to the kidnapped man and use their own names names and engage in long conversation with him, so he knows exactly who they are and who to kill as in revenge.

In the real world, the kidnapped man would be blindfolded, gagged and as the duration of the kidnapping was only 24 hours, no food or water would be needed, so would be kept bound and thrown him in a cellar somewhere.

After 30 minutes the movie seemed to be heading down the road of comedic unraveling of the kidnap plan through the stupidity of the whole group so I stopped watching in frustration Prismark10 5 April Four friends become four dumb criminals when a huge investment deal turns sour and realise that the money for the investment came from an underworld criminal boss who wants his money back.

The four of them kidnap the rival gangster and wait for further instructions. In the meantime Marques plays with their heads that causes tensions.

Jackie Earle Haley directed the film as well as appearing in it. Travolta has a glorified cameo with his awful hairpiece and his presence makes you hark back to those twisty Tarantino type thrillers.

There is a 'The Usual Suspects' type denouement which lifts the film from being truly dreadful but it is too little and too late for what is a humdrum and wearisome film.

Ed-Shullivan 27 December So the kidnapping plan is set in motion with the four amateurs and although it hits a few snags they eventually get the kidnapping completed and they keep the mob hostage tied up for their loan shark waiting to get the green light to let him go.

What follows is about 60 minutes of continuous blather by all cast members including a whole lot of four letter words that rhyme with the word "PUCK".

Most sensible film goers would at some point get up and ask for a refund but since I purchased the Blu Ray I chose to bear with the directors master less piece and although I was becoming very irritated with the endless blather of totally useless dialogue by the six main characters which I assumed was necessary to fill an otherwise empty void to completing a 94 minute movie I hung in there and I was rewarded with a better than average film end.

So if you can hang in there through a pretty boring middle half of the film with a lot of useless four letter word dialogue you may be pleasantly surprised with an above average decent film ending.

Im not going to say much other than it reminded me of suicide kinds with a much better twist. Iveseen a lot of reviews where people are complaining about the twist at the end.

I found it totally unpredictable and actually gave you an answer to the whole movie unlike so many movies today where it ends with someone just walking away and you are left saying "that's it"?

I gave it a 7 only because 7. I would watch it a second time and i do suggest this movie as a good movie that will not leave you feeling you've wasted your time.

Also, i had no problems with any of the acting, overall i would give the actors a 7 as well. I must say I was very sceptical about this movie as I'd never heard of it before, so seeing it was on TV I decided to look it up on here.

A very low rating and a dubious start to the film did not fill me with confidence. However the more I watched the more enthralled I became.

From early on you get the impression there is more to the story than meets the eye, and indeed there are numerous sub plots, this is not a movie to watch casually.

The various twists and turns for the most part come totally out of the blue, but slowly combine to explain each other gradually, pulling you further in till the final ending which I must admit came as a total surprise to me This film contains some dark humor and a surprise twist ending, but in my opinion it's barely a grade B-movie.

We've seen many similar type movies over the years, so, to me, this one came across as rather a "poor cousin" in comparison to some of the others that are named by several reviewers on this site.

This is one of those films that if I revealed too much about the plot details I would be writing too many spoilers, so let's just say all is not what it seems on screen.

However, when the reasons for what's occurring are revealed it just seemed quite flimsy to me. This movie marks the directorial debut of acclaimed actor Jackie Earle Haley, who also is excellent in a supporting role here.

Robert Lowell also makes his screen debut as the scriptwriter. All in all, the film is not going to win any awards, but I was interested enough to want to know how it would all turn out, even though some of the journey was a bit painful.

In the end, it all just seemed more of a gimmick than anything else. I felt that this film was well thought out and for a guy who is generally pretty good at figuring out twists in a film this one was successful in tripping me up.

This is not a big budget film by modern day Hollywood standards but felt it was casted very well and very entertaining. The story line and the characters keep you engaged and there are no "slow" points in this film.

It has a great balance of action scenes as well as intellectual content to keep all types entertained. A film I can honestly say is worth seeing and you would not be disappointed in this film unless you are an "impossible to impress or please" kind of person.

This movie is considerably better than the low ratings would have you believe. The plot is strong, with a few good twists along away the way.

If there is one criticism, and I'm guessing this is where the low ratings come in its that the production quality could have been better.

While the acting is good, some of the scenes feel a little too stifled and not tight enough. I think the director missed a trick not upping the pace.

This isn't an action movie, although it would have played better with a more fluid rhythm. The relationship between the characters could have been developed more during the plot which would only have added to the brilliant plot twist at the end.

My advice to anyone considering watching this, ignore the ratings and watch it. Its OK, but could have been so much better.
