MacFarlane obviously understands this and has mastered how to utilize this principle very well. I also enjoyed all the surprising cameos sprinkled throughout the film.
And the panoramic cinematography is just stunning, genuinely a work of art. And he didn't have to do that. He deliberately made sure the images would be as beautiful as possible, while driving home the fact that amid all this breathtaking beauty there existed the horror of agony and death around every turn.
From what I've read and learned about life even a mere to years ago, this is actually how life was -- a horror show. Even in the big, "civilized" cities, life was very hard, horribly dirty, dangerous, disease-ridden and terrifying.
It helps explain why the average lifespan was so incredibly short, compared with today. These days, we're used to many people living even a century.
Back then, a century of life would be considered an absolute miracle and utterly unusual, with all the thousand little things waiting to take your health or your life.
In this respect, the film gets it absolutely right. So, it holds no surprise for me that MacFarlane can glean so much humour out of circumstances so dismal and bleak.
Humour out of pain. Works every time. I love this film. Even better than "Ted" which is hilarious.
Seth MacFarlane is quickly becoming one of my favorite comedic directors. His acting isn't half bad either. The choice of Charlize Theron as the female lead was excellent.
Sexy, funny, a side of her I haven't seen in years. Why they keep using her in films as the bad-girl I'll never know, because she truly brought it in this one.
Liam Neeson is perfect as the bad-guy murderous gunslinger husband of Seth's love interest. The film features some top talent including Neil Patrick Harris, and Giovanni Ribisi and contains one of the most violent yet funny bar-fights I've ever seen.

I came across this film when channel hopping one evening, and as Sky gives a short description of what you have highlighted, and sometimes tells you who is in it, as soon as I saw Charlize Theron's name, in my opinion one of the few extremely gorgeous women on this planet I switched on,and hit the record button.
Unfortunately it was already about 15 minutes in,but in the following week I watched it at least another four times. I then ordered the DVD to see what I had missed.
I looked through some of the other reviews, there is a lot of different comment some good,some not in favour at all. I agree it is quite crude in places, sexual references which you just have to look past, but many other parts, particularly when" Anna " Charlize was trying to teach " Albert" Seth to fire a six-gun I laughed so much that tears ran down my cheeks, and Anna was a crack shot.
The progressing romance between Albert and Anna I feel was beautifully portrayed and took you away from the cruder parts. Some nice photography and some nice performances from the supporting cast but sadly Seth MacFarlane's leading role is misjudged and the writing well, co-writing is poor, almost infantile.
The jokes which are few and far between are laboured for the most part. Don't get me wrong, there are a few wry smiles but no big laughs. The direction is laboured and the film becomes tedious.
It is one of the few films where I have fallen asleep through boredom and I have seen 14, films. A nice score by Joel McNeely and some glorious shots of the mid-west.
I can see why this was a failure at the box office. The DVD is a barebones release. If you love 'Ted. Forget what the pompous, stuffy critics say, buy the movie and have a ball with a great cast of talented actors.
You'll probably love the cameo appearances too - my only complaint there being that Ted doesn't make an appearance.
Now that would have been the icing on the cake! And I guarantee it's a cake you'll want repeated slices of! Report abuse.
