The fact that the characters are royalty only mildly raises the stakes regarding the decisions they make and allows for lots of chic scenery and blow-out parties in which to set the drama The entire palace is like a college campus, almost everyone except the queen and king are in their twenties.
The queen is unrealistically mean she's like an updated, evil stepmom , very much the sister to Revenge's Victoria Greyson. Every once and awhile the show touches upon intrigue, scandal and even character growth, but nothing really comes of it and the drama quickly goes back to its petty high school she-said-he-said regularity.
Revision: The intrigue does pick-up at the end. However, anyone who is familiar with Hamlet will know where the writers are getting their somewhat-better material from the prince's girlfriend is named Ophelia for goodness sake!
Overall, a trashy show and it's not going to win any awards, but it's also somewhat entertaining. I've just been letting it play in the background as I do chores.
But the background music competes with actors dialogue!! However, the trashy GEN Y "virtue-signaling",that is written into the dialogue, gets annoying.
Until season two, I came to the conclusion that this TV show makes fun of the British royal family which is ok considering I'm American.
As a viewer, I do get tired of some of the dialogue and find myself fast forwarding to the other character scenes. Season 1 and most of 2 were really good but Season 3 started to lose me.
Lets hope the writers bring back to life some of the characters because the only one that is interesting is Jasper and "Len" with maybe the return of Robert.
Also, I liked how dysfunctional the relationship was between Jasper and Len. In season 3, Jasper seems boring and weak. Liam's character is too clean which gets boring too.
Over time, the characters try to redeem themselves as better people when I found them more interesting when they were a hot mess.
Princess Eleanor being drug free makes her uninteresting.. She was much more "colorful" when she was drug fueled and bitchy.

After watching 2 shows I was hooked. But I felt like I was missing pieces of the story. I did a internet search for Season 1 and was able to watch season 1 and 2 to catch up on Amazon.
I watched season 1 in a day and season 2 the next. When I first heard about the show I thought oh no, not another Downtin Abbey show about England with actors I can't understand.
Hope this show is around for many years. It is a refreshing change from anything currently on TV. Can't wait to see what happens next.
Elizabeth Hurley is the only actress in the show that I have ever heard of, and I was not really a fan.
But I must say she is perfect in the role as Queen Helena.

And the rest of the cast is fantastic. King Cyrus Jake Maskall is definitely someone you will love to hate. Jasper Frost Tom Austen is so sexy.
And Princess Eleanor Alexandra Park does a great job portraying the out of control party girl. I started out thinking I was not going to like the stuffiness and class distinction in this show and I was almost right I watched the entire series in just a few days, sometimes back to back episodes which is what I like to do I will watch Season2 just to see what is going on in that palace.
The make up of the show has everything I liked it well enough to go with four stars. But a good enough watch! If there's one "redeeming value" in this program, it's all the different ways so many people can be deceitful, conniving and hurtful, and trying to keep up with who is being horrible to whom.
The one character who actually is a good person is King Simon, but it's his honest approach to what's best for England that gets him in a serious world of hurt.
Whether or not anything in this is believable isn't the problem. For me, it either needs a big touch of class or to really go overboard with its crassness.
I find it sitting somewhere in the lower middle of soap operas, not that I'm an expert on soap operas. It also needs to tone down the "background" music -- it's often over-powering.
One trivia tidbit: Blenheim Palace is the location used as the Royal Palace. It's the only non-royal non-episcopal country house in England to hold the title of palace.

But it is not. It's done in a v modern style with pop music playing over the top so it feels very Hollyoaks-ish. That would have been far more realistic.
The storylines strain credibility. Having said that it's a good watch. Just not very realistic. I would rate it "satisfactory.

I mean It s about the Monarchy but the view is very visionary that s why I think It s a superficial story that can help dreaming for a while about a world that probably could not exist in real life I love the royals, it's my guilty pleasure.
Princess Eleanor is my favourite and the handsome Jasper.
