I reached out to filmmaker Anna Biller to talk to her about her interest in the occult, her cinematic influences, gender polarity, and the odd cases of synchronicity that popped up during her production.
It really looked like you did your homework. Anna Biller: I tried to do the kind of research that someone would do if they were going to be initiated as a witch.
At one point, I thought of actually becoming an initiate! It was very time-consuming to do all that reading, and it took me a much longer time to write the script because I kept wanting to know more and needed more for the story.
Was there any particular occult tradition that you drew the most inspiration from, or were you inspired by a mix of different practices?
It was a little bit from multiple sources, but mainly it was Janet and Stewart Farrar, the Gardnerians , and a little bit of Alex Sanders. Were you able to observe or take part of any rituals as part of your research for the movie?
There are a lot of witches in Los Angeles, where I live, and I knew some witches already. I also ended up casting a number of real witches as witches without realizing they were witches.
I was just casting them to be extras in the coven scenes. But it turns out that a lot of them were also actual practicing witches! One of the things that struck me about your film was the extraordinary set design.
The fact that one person wrote, shot, and designed this film boggles the mind. That was important to me, to get the design to feel occult.
The idea was that her apartment was originally owned by another witch, so she would have dictated what the design would be. There are people who have whole apothecaries in their houses!
My house is full of stuff for art-making, so I made a lot of the art in the spirit which I always make stuff for my films. It was really fun for me to make soaps, candles , little herb bags, voodoo dolls, and the rugs.
That feels magical. I felt like part of being a witch is crafting your own objects, crafting your tools. Just the way they talk about glamours and using sex as a form of manipulation felt very LaVey.

I did find it a little uneasy in places, but I wouldn't go as far as to call it a horror film, as I feel it takes more than a witch and a couple of deaths here and there to be classed as a horror film.
Nonetheless, the film poses some good ideas and is one of the most unique efforts of horror film making I've seen since Ti West's vintage flick The House of the Devil or the Rob Zombie film Lords of Salem, that both managed to recapture that 60's witchy, satanic panic vibe.
Harry W Super Reviewer. Jan 05, Quentin Tarantino, Martin Scorsese, Terrence Malick, and, not kidding, Sofia Coppola make films you can peg as theirs within the opening frames.
By that standard, Anna Biller would be an auteur's auteur, because she does almost everything - writes, directs, produces, edits, paints the art on the walls I mean everything!
It's all in service of a very specific aesthetic hearkening back to the Technicolor thrillers and dramas of the 60s and 70s. There's a little bit of Hammer horror, Russ Meyer kitsch, and Radley Metzler erotica thrown into the mix, but with a more modern feminist twist.
Nothing in her films resembles real life, and it's strictly intentional. Ross Hunter, who produced the types of artificial melodramas Biller most likely emulates as well, once famously said, "The way life looks in my pictures is how I want life to be.
I don't want to hold a mirror up to life as it is". It's the story of Elaine Samantha Robinson , a witch who seeks true love, but her potions keep leading to disastrous consequences.
She moves into a Victorian boarding house in Eureka, California, and if weren't for the presence of cell phones and computers, you'd swear it was set in the 60s.
When Elaine drives, Biller and her master cinematographer, M. The costumes, makeup, music, hair, high key lighting and sets evoke a candy-colored dream land.
Elaine fills her world with erotic paintings and tiered cake trays filled with an endless array of desserts. She frequents a female-only cafe where the customers sip on tea and listen to the stylings of a harpist.
She finds friendship with Trish Laura Waddell , a married woman who disagrees with Elaine, who espouses using "womanly wiles" to satisfy her men.
Trish has more of a feminist bent, but seems the unhappier of the two. Elaine finds her power by looking and acting the way men expect of women, but turns the tables on them once she has them in her grips.
It's as if she subjugates herself to the patriarchy, but her instincts can't help but snuff it out. A little warning.
It's a little too slow at times and could have benefited with fewer minutes, but part of me wanted to just watch this movie forever. The actors play the material with the utmost of sincerity.
While some would use this examination to make Elaine a perfectly innocent character, Biller digs a bit deeper. When we see Elaine at the beginning of the film she is already a murderer.
Witchcraft is a way for Elaine to reclaim her power, to no longer be the victim, but to be the predatory figure herself. It felt refreshing to have the darkness of love be turned into something so toxically cathartic.
Biller wants to allow the witch to be a villain, but not just in a jaded woman kind of way. Rather, she accomplishes this by showing how Elaine has been hungry for true love, yet also taught to fear attachment.

The film offers a brilliant spin on the genre's despicable gender politics, all the while relishing in the pleasures of its outmoded visual style.
Elena Lazic. A note-perfect parody of the British Technicolor horror films of the Sixties. Ed Potton. The Love Witch goes beyond camp, beyond pastiche; it ignites the pulpy surfaces of its tale and produces a smoke of bad-dream sexiness and scariness.
It's a B-movie with A-grade potency. Peter Bradshaw. The mix of am-dram solemnity, grand guignol and Terpsichorean time-tripping is hypnotic.
Nigel Andrews. Even in the film's most far-fetched moments, Biller has trenchant points to make about conservative, middle-class America's fear of female sexuality and the double standards that apply to men and women's romantic behaviour.
Geoffrey Macnab. This is not a potion fit for everyone, but for a select few, The Love Witch offers powerful magic. Barry Hertz.
